How to Create your Own Pose in Adobe Illustrator

How to Create your Own Pose in Adobe Illustrator

Although our Toon Characters come in sets of 100 poses, it is possible that none of our set poses suit your needs perfectly. So our ultimate pack gives you the option to create your own pose. We’ve described in 3 simple steps how to do that in Adobe Illustrator.

1. Load symbol library.

Our Toon Characters are symbol based. If you don’t know what a symbol in Adobe Illustrator is, and you are not sure how to use it, take a quick look at our article “How to use symbols in Adobe Illustrator.

2. Drag and drop body parts from the “Symbols” panel to the artboard.

Once you’ve got our symbol gallery loaded, you just have to select the separate objects and match them together. Drag and drop objects one by one to the artboard in no particular order. For example, take a head, eyes, eyebrows, mouth, arms, hands, body, book and a target.

3. Adjust the symbols to fit into place.

Now comes the fun part. Just use the mouse or the keyboard arrows to position the elements properly. When combining the different objects, mind the hierarchy, e.g. the eyes should be placed in front of the head. Change the stacking order by using the “Layers” panel or just select the element and press the shortkey “Ctrl + ]” or “Ctr + [“.

Control which object to be placed above below the other objects.

Here’s how we’ve mixed and matched the symbols for this demo.

Sounds simple? It actually is. You can create a new pose in just a few clicks.

How to get the Symbol Library? Is it predefined in AI?

Yep, it’s predefined in the ai sources and also comes as a separate “symbol_library.ai” file in all ultimate packages.

Unfortunately you need at least Adobe Illustrator CS5 or above to open/use the symbol libraries. :(

Yes, you can. All you have to do is copy the parts you want to use from another character and paste them in your current one.

      Hello,

So sorry for the late reply. Could you tell us which character in particular you purchased?

Besides ai, you should have jpg, png, pdf files of the character. Also if you have purchased any of our new toons, they were made with Adobe Illustrator CC, so you might have problems with CS5.

The symbol library just appears to be empty, you have to activate it from Window->Symbols and it will show up.

      Hope that helps.
